On June 22, Beijing time, the Houston Rockets are regarded as one of the teams most likely to acquire Kevin Durant. They were among the three teams mentioned in the list of Durant's desired destinations that was leaked to the media last weekend. However, in a recent podcast, insider Sam Amick disclosed that the Rockets and the Suns have not engaged in discussions about Durant's trade for several days.
Amick stated, “I learned yesterday that the Rockets have not been in contact with the Suns since last week, and that call did not go very well. Of course, the situation may have changed since then; I want to emphasize that this is the status as of yesterday. They (the Rockets) are very eager to acquire Durant, but only at their price.”
In the negotiations for Durant, the Suns seem to be at an impasse with several teams. Reports suggest that the Suns are not satisfied with the offers from the Rockets, Spurs, Heat, Timberwolves, Raptors, and other teams, believing that these offers do not provide adequate compensation for a player of Durant's caliber.
Earlier this week, a report by Amick and Jon Krawczynski indicated that the Rockets have made a “definitive offer” for Durant. Although the details of the offer have not been officially disclosed, this might be the highest offer that General Manager Rafael Stone is willing to make under the current circumstances.
Despite Durant still performing at an All-Star level, his age and contract situation limit what competitors are willing to pay. He will turn 37 in September and is entering the final year of his current contract, which pays $54.7 million. He is eligible to sign a two-year extension with a new team, but he has indicated that he will only consider long-term contracts with the Rockets, Spurs, or Heat.
Rockets reporter Dubos stated that Stone is very eager to trade for Durant, provided that the deal aligns with the team's short-term and long-term interests. He will not mortgage the team's future for a player nearing the end of his career, so he hopes the Suns' asking price will eventually decrease.
Suns reporter Gambadoro reported that the Suns are unlikely to agree to a trade with Houston for Durant unless they include Jabari Smith Jr. Gambadoro also mentioned that if they do not receive an offer they like, the Suns are willing to extend trade negotiations beyond the draft.
