IOC President Thomas Bach's decision to resign at the end of his term in June was pushed for by external forces

The IOC issued a statement on Wednesday announcing that IOC President Thomas Bach had decided to resign at the end of his term in June and would not remain a member of the IOC. "The IOC Executive Board has agreed to accept the resignation of IOC President Thomas Bach, whose resignation will take effect after 23 June 2025," the IOC said in a statement.

The IOC announced that Bach had decided to resign at the end of his presidency in June this year and would not remain a member of the IOC

The 71-year-old won Olympic gold in fencing in 1976 and joined the IOC in 1991, where he served as president for 12 years. He was supposed to remain a member of the IOC until he was 80 years old, but he has decided to resign as a member of the IOC.

Bach will officially take over the presidency on June 23, while the new president will be elected in the race for the IOC's Annual Meeting in Greece on March 20. At present, a total of seven people are interested in running for the post of IOC president, namely the current IOC Vice President Samaranch Jr., Executive Board members Coventry and Prince Faisal, as well as World Athletics President Koe, International Cycling Federation President Lapation, International Ski Union President Eliasch and International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) President Morinari Watanabe.

During Bach's presidency, human rights groups urged him to resign after accusations that he was not focused on human rights and only on monetary gain.
