Yoo Seung-min, president of the Korean Sports Association, is accelerating the pace of reform to change the future of Korean sports

Yoo Seung-min, 43, who was elected president of the 42nd Korean Sports Association, is accelerating the pace of reform to change the future of Korean sports. Yoo Seung-min will hold a general meeting of representatives on the 28th local time to begin his term as chairman, but before he officially takes office, he will reform the committee that proposes the need for improvement after obtaining the approval of the board of directors.

Yoo Seung-min raised his hands to express his gratitude after winning the election for the president of the 42nd Korea Sports Association on January 14, 2025.

Currently, there are 31 committees operated by the Korea Athletic Association. Reflecting Yoo Seungmin's wishes, the Sports Association is promoting the merger of committees with similar functions. It is reported that the Human Rights Management Committee and the Sports Human Rights Committee will be merged into the Human Rights Committee, and the Sports Committee for the Elderly and the Women's Sports Committee are also considering merging with the Life Sports Committee. In addition, one of the ideas is to merge the Inter-Korean Sports Exchange Committee, which has been sluggish due to the rigidity of inter-Korean relations, into an international committee.

At the same time, the ESG Management Committee was also included in the merger discussion. However, Yoo Seungmin has promised to establish a "Coaching Committee" in order to improve the rights and interests of coaches, coaches, etc., so he is considering how to integrate into this part.

There is currently an Athletes' Committee and a Referee Committee, as well as an athlete-related committee. Yoo Seung-min explained to South Korean media on the 25th: "The various committees of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are well run with the participation of IOC members and expert groups. The basic idea is to merge similar functions and achieve institutional downsizing. ”

As a result, the number of committees of the Korean Athletic Association will be reduced from the current 31 to about 25 through the "slimming". In addition, the special assistant system, which was criticized for "rough operation" during the period of former Chairman Lee Ki-heung, will be revised. The main function of the Special Assistant is to assist the President in the smooth execution of business and to advise on the main policies of the Sports Association, and currently has a total of 10 people. But with the resignation of former chairman Lee Ki-hing, the term of special assistant ended at the end of last month. Yoo Seungmin's policy is to drastically reduce the size of the special assistant's team if it is not necessary. He explained: "Regarding the operation of the special assistant, the operation according to reality is being discussed. ”

At the same time, Yoo Seungmin plans to set up an operational task force (TF) to focus on three aspects: fulfillment of commitments, school sports, and local sports, so as to lay the foundation for the advancement of Yoo Seungmin's commitment to reform. Yoo Seung-min will also submit the improvement plan of the committee and special assistant to the new council to be held in late March or early April through the General Assembly of Acting Representatives on the 28th.
