Hours after Rafael Devers' remarks at Red Sox training camp insisting on staying on third base made the news, he happily joked with Alex Bregman at a team dinner at the home of team manager Alex Cora on Monday.
On Tuesday, Braggman, who is also a third baseman, was specifically asked about his interactions with Devers.
"We got along very well. We're having a lot of fun together," says Bugman, "and we've been practicing boccia when we're training together here. Talking about wins, talking about baseball, looking forward to the season. We got together for dinner last night. It feels great. ”
Although Bregman won the American League Golden Glove at third base last season, he is willing to leave third base and play second base if Korra thinks it's best for the team.
'I'm super excited to be his team-mate,' Bregman said of Devers, 'and he's a fantastic player. I feel like everybody in this dressing room is focused on winning, and as long as I can help the team win, I'm going to give it my all. Wherever Cora tells me to play, I play it. ”
As training camp progresses, the placement of the players is still to be determined, but what makes Cora happy is the state of the partnership between Braegman and Devers.
This is reflected in all aspects on and off the pitch.
On Monday, just hours after Devers' high-profile press conference, Korra invited the team to his home for a bond, and the coach couldn't help but notice the interaction between the two veterans.
"They talked for 45 minutes," Korra said.
Bregman doesn't mind the views Devers, the Red Sox's most senior player, has expressed to the media.
"I feel like everybody here has a lot of confidence in what they're capable of," Bregman said, "and I think we all believe that if everybody gives it their all this season, we have a good chance of being a winning baseball team." For me, I can only represent myself, as long as I can help the team win, let me play anywhere. ”
The Red Sox have yet to make it clear that they will switch positions for Devers. So far, they have only suggested that it is possible to let him go as the designated striker based on the specifics of the training camp squad.
Although Devers has steadfastly dismissed the idea, he will work hard to improve his performance on third base in training camp.
Casas supported Devers as third baseman
Not surprisingly, Triston Casas, the Red Sox's most vocal first baseman, offered his thoughts on the dispute over the location of third and second base.
"I think that's where Rafael Devers is," Casas said, "and I think he's the third baseman." He's been playing in this position for a long time. And I feel like he's only going to get better and better in this position. I feel like his defense is getting better every year. We don't know what the future holds, but we do know that Rafael Devers will always be there.
"So I think he should continue to play defensively. It keeps him in competitive shape, and because at third base, he hits better. He wasn't familiar with other positions and didn't want to play in other positions. And he's going to fight for it, even if it's against any young player or new player. ”
Casas was confident that Bregman would make the move to second base.
"I think Bregman should play second base, yes. I think he's a good positional transition — he's athletic enough," Casas said, "and I think Trevor [Trevor Story] would be a great shortstop." ”
But what if Kristian Campbell, a potential rookie ranked No. 7 in Major League Baseball's Top 100 Rookies, has a chance to compete for second base spot if he does well in training camp? Interestingly, Casas believes that Campbell, Roman Anthony (No. 2 on the MLB Top 100 Rookies) and Marcelo Meyer (No. 12 on the MLB Top 100) should start the season in minor leagues.
"I think we have some mature players in the squad and some problems that need to be worked out," Casas said, "and we need to show our quality first and see how well we work together for the first time." I feel like their chances will always come and probably soon, but for now, the big squad is perfect. Well-organized and well-structured. ”
