Polar bear Alonso returns to the Mets on a new two-year, $54 million contract

Pete Alonso is back. On Wednesday night, a source revealed to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that the Mets slugger has agreed to sign as a free agent to return to the only team he has played for in his major league career. According to sources, Alonso has a two-year contract worth $54 million, with him having the option to jump out of his contract after the 2025 season. He will receive a $10 million signing bonus, a salary of $20 million in 2025 and a $24 million player option in 2026. The team has not yet confirmed the signing and the specific terms.

Since making his debut in the major leagues in 2019, only one player has scored more home runs than Alonso's 226: Aaron Judge (232). In 2025, at the age of 30, Alonso remains one of the league's top strikers and one of the most durable. In the five full seasons of his major league career, the first baseman played in at least 152 games per season. In the 2020 season, which was shortened due to the pandemic, he played in 57 of the 60 games for the Mets.

In 2019, Alonso, who made his debut in the major leagues, hit 53 home runs, breaking Judge's rookie record of 52 home runs set two seasons earlier. His outstanding performance earned him the National League Rookie of the Year award, as well as the first of four All-Star selections.

Alonso's career batting average is 0.514, although last year his batting average was below 0.500 (0.459) for the first time in four seasons, when he hit 34 home runs. The good news is that the quality of his shots is still on par with his career average – his "sweet spot" batting rate of 13.2% is slightly below his career level of 14%, while his strong batting rate of 46.4% is the highest in four seasons.

Defensively, Alonso has never been among the top first basemen, but he has improved defensively since moving into the major leagues. In 2020, he scored -5 points in 57 games, but since then, in four seasons, he has scored +6 points.

Alonso has also proven his efficiency in the playoffs. In 16 career playoff games, he hit .278/.429/.574 in three and hit five home runs. Four of those home runs were blasted last fall, when he helped the Mets reach the National League Championship.
